April 2018 Action Alert: Support NASA Astrophysics and WFIRST

Ashlee Wilkins

This week, ask your US senators and representative to support NASA astrophysics and community-derived science priorities. Head to our Action Alert tool to get contact information for your elected officials and talking points from the AAS on the issue.

WFIRST Mission PatchThe administration's budget proposal for fiscal year (FY) 2019 includes a drastic cut to NASA astrophysics and termination of the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), the top-priority space mission of the 2010 consensus decadal survey in astronomy and astrophysics.

The president's budget proposal is only the first step in the annual appropriations process; now Congress is writing the bills that will govern federal spending next year. In the final legislation passed in March to fund the current fiscal year, Congress reiterated its support of community-derived science priorities, and we want to see that support continued in FY 2019 and beyond.

A coalition of industry and university supporters of WFIRST will visit Congress tomorrow (Thursday, 12 April) to advocate for the mission, and you can amplify their efforts from home by contacting your members of Congress with the same messages.
