SCIENTIFIC RATIONALE
 
An outstanding issue in galaxy evolution is to understand star formation and its dependence on the environment within galaxies, on the scales of individual stars to those of kpc–size structures. In particular, we would like to determine the extent to which the physical conditions of both local and global environment are imprinted on the spatial distribution and clustering of young stars and gas, and affects the subsequent evolution of those structures.  Significant progress on the characterization of the relationship between galactic environment and star formation is on the horizon in both observations and simulations, and has been aided by the recognition that key processes (e.g., stellar feedback) are inherently multi-scale in nature.  The Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey (LEGUS) is an HST Treasury programs aimed at investigating these  issues in nearby galaxies and is now close to completion. Thus, it is timely to bring together observers and theorists to report on the latest of these results and discuss key observational metrics that will best constrain models of both star formation and feedback.
 
We shall have an introductory Session (0) with two reviews of various measurements of the spatial distributions of resolved stellar populations within galaxies and recent observational results, and 3 main sessions, devoted to the following topics:
- Session (1) what factors determine the largest galactic scales on which star formation is coordinated/coherent?  how might the characteristic maximal scale change with redshift?  can we use such a framework to understand large higher-z star forming clumps as well as their cousins in the local universe?
- Session (2) are there distinct modes of star formation that give rise to star clusters vs. the galactic "field"; to starburst galaxies vs. "normal" star forming galaxies?
- Session (3) star formation scaling relationships on different physical scales (nature of the KS law; measurement of SFRs, measurement of the stellar IMF)

- Phil Hopkins: SF models on large scales and the connection to the S-K law 
- Cliff Johnson: cluster formation and evolution from PHAT 
- Diederik Kruijssen: cluster formation theory, the gas point of view 
- Adam Leroy:the spatially-resolved scaling laws of star formation 
- Kristen McQuinn: spatially resolved SF histories 
- Eve Ostriker: feedback and cluster formation 
- Amelie Saintonge: The properties of the cold gas in nearby and distant galaxies 
- Valentina Tamburello: simulations of clumpy SF 
- David Thilker: Synthesis of the collaborative effort by the LEGUS team from the observational point of view
