Boise scenic in Fall

Welcome to Boise

Boise is ranked one of the most up-and-coming desirable cities in America. Attendees love our meeting spaces, but they love what they can do after hours even more. Boise is known for its clean, walkable and vibrant downtown filled with restaurants, shops, bars and entertainment all within steps of meeting spaces and hotels. In addition, the Boise River Greenbelt, a 25-mile tree-lined paved pedestrian and cycling pathway, meanders through downtown as it follows the Boise River. Just minutes from downtown, attendees also enjoy miles of hiking and biking trails through the Boise Foothills.

Planning Your Trip
Location: Boise, ID
Venue: Boise Centre

If coming from far away, combining DPS with other work travel and/or vacation may reduce the overall number of flights. Potential Combined Destinations include Yellowstone (~6 hour drive), Portland (6.5 hour drive), Salt Lake City (5 hour), Lake Tahoe (~7 hours), (Potentially the Grand Canyon/San Francisco/Los Angeles/Las Vegas for people coming from far away, but it would probably include another flight). Combine with other things! https://visitidaho.org/things-to-do/

Choosing Transportation
Public ground transportation is usually the best, but it is limited in the Boise area, which is not served by Amtrak. Valley Regional Transit’s Main Street Station is beneath the Boise Centre (location of the meeting), giving people the option to take a bus. https://www.valleyregionaltransit.org/ They also have routes from the airport

Driving vs. Flying
Driving produces about 8.8 kg of CO2 per gallon of gasoline. Usually this means that carpooling breaks even GHG-wise with flying for between 2 and 3 passengers, assuming a direct flight. Driving can be the preferred option for people in the Northwestern US if multiple people take one vehicle, or if using an EV/PHEV.

Flights
Google Flights (https://www.google.com/travel/flights/) provide a relative estimate of GHG emissions associated with each itinerary. Differences can be very significant and whenever possible this should be taken into account when choosing flights. Google Flight example below, sorted by Emission:

Some companies (including United, Air France and KLM) offer an option of contributing to their sustainable aviation fuel fund, but that typically does not change energy use on your own flight.

Example of Hotels and Restaurants Committed to Sustainability

  • Hotel 43 → Partnership with “Clean the World”
  • Hyatt Place
  • Residence Inn by Marriot
  • Bittercreek Alehouse → Farm-to-table ingredients and vermicompost bins
  • Trillium → local, seasonal menu sourcing and partnership with local producers
