Kevin Marvel American Astronomical Society (AAS)

The American Astronomical Society (AAS) believes that fostering the next generation of astronomers is important for the health of the entire astronomical sciences community. Membership in the AAS as a Graduate Student Member plays an important part in the comprehensive preparation needed for a career in astronomy, planetary science, heliophysics, or one of the many careers outside academe where you and your skill set will flourish. Exposure to and engagement with the AAS through the Society’s conferences, journals, committees, and social media are key to becoming a professional wherever your career path may take you. The Society has therefore expanded a special membership enrollment program that provides a substantial benefit to graduate students.

Initiated by past-president David Helfand as part of the AAS Agents Program, the enrollment program provides for two free years of Graduate Student membership when their academic department recruits all incoming graduate students as Graduate Student Members. For 2020, a department can ensure four full years of membership and all the benefits thereof for just $138 per student. The Society covers the additional $138.

Details are available from the AAS Agent in your department, or, if you don’t have an AAS Agent (and we suggest you explore getting one), you can contact Diane Frendak, the Society’s Director of Membership Services.
